Welcome back to another episode of The Art of Nude – June print competition edition. I attended my second print competition with the Houston Photographic Society on Tuesday 23rd. I entered two prints to be judged, one black and white and one color. Both were photo from our My Nude Year project; day 7 and day 40.
The judge for this event was Hugh Hargrave. Mr. Hargrave study photography at the Brooks Institute of Art in California and then received his master’s in photography for Sam Houston State Universality. He has been a professional photographer for over 20 years and is also a professor for the Art Institute. He is a wonderful judge and by the way in which he judged the competition you can tell he is a very good teacher.
Day 7 – Black and White category “My Nude Year – Day 7”
Mr. Hargrave really liked this image and gave it third place which was a real honor due to the other photos in the group. There was a lot of really terrific work and it was all very strong. He did not give much feedback on this photo and I was unable to attend the after social event to ask him more questions.
Day 40 – Color category “My Nude Year – Day 40”
He said this image was stronger than day 7 due to the difference in textures and the pose of the model. The one item he found fault with was the placement of the necklace. He stated that in a photo such as this you should bring the accessory around to the camera side of the model even if it is not the correct placement for real life. I do see his point and really appreciate his critique. This photo did not receive a ribbon I guess due to the amount of really strong work in the category. I am a member of a group of really talented and experienced photographers which is great and will push me to learn and do better.
If you are an amateur like me I highly recommend you join a group such as this. The amount of information you can get from the members as well as the judges in invaluable. It is also fun to have a group of people to hang around with that share your love for a hobby.
Until next time,
