Good day everyone and welcome back to The Art of Nude blog for another photo review. Today we will be looking at another photo of model Shannon Purdy taken in Madrid, New Mexico.
Principals of composition: The strong use of diagonals is very easy to spot in this photo of Shannon on one of the coal tailings in New Mexico. You may also notice that Shannon’s breasts are located very near the left Rule of Thirds line, which would bisect the first intersection of lines in the diagonal. Shannon’s very pale skin in contrast to the dark surroundings draws the viewer’s eye immediately to her figure. Other elements that may grab your attention are the difference in textures between her skin and the surrounding coal chips as well as the jagged trees in the background.
Notes on this image: Due to the angle of the sun the transition area from light to dark in this photo is very abrupt. Normally this would have killed the photo and turned it into an automatic delete item. The one saving element was the reflective nature of the coal chips themselves. This reflection was enough to fill in the shadow cast by Shannon’s body opposite the light source, in this case the sun. This created just enough fill light to make the shadow a very light and pleasing gray tone. I really love the backlighting on Shannon’s hair in this shot. It really makes her stand out from the background and brings my eye to her face. The shadowing on her face is soft yet the darkness of her eyes and lips really make the image almost sensual.
I would really appreciate you signing up for my newsletter (http://beta.privy.com/s/fr18tsI). My newsletter is the best source of information about big changes in the works. An example would be my blog moving to a new site that is finally back up after several months of down time.
I will bring you another photo from this shoot again next week. We are nearing the end of this first shoot for Shannon. I am drawing this one out so that you will get a real sense for my writing style.
I hope to see you back soon. If you have any questions or comments for me please leave them in the blog. I will try to answer everyone that takes the time and effort to write me.
